Wrestling Recap: Utah 1A, 2A and 3A Junior High State Championships

(Youth1 Wrestling) - Action in the Beehive State picked up over the weekend as wrestlers from across the state competed for thier first state championship of the season. Wrestlers in the 7th through 9th grades hit the mats at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, Utah to compete in the 2012 Utah 1A, 2A and 3A Junior High State Championships.
Below, we take a look at how each of the junior high brackets placed out.
Clinching the 67-pound competition was Braxton Mickelsen of North Sevier as he defeated Rhett Lee of
Slade Sheriff of Millard walked away as 70-pound champion after a victory in 3:41 over Stetson Wright of Milford in the title match. Braxton Bailey of Canyon View took the bronze award due to a forfeit by Chris Payne of Morgan.
Gage Mason of North Sevier took home the 73-pound title after he defeated Tyler Dalton of Delta, 7-4, in the championship match. Mason was a champion of the Nebo Wrestling Invitational this past December. Rounding out the third spot was Jayden Williams of Summit Smith with a win in 0:55 against Drew Jones of Carbon.
Delta’s Brady Poulsen pulled the upset in the 76-pound championship as he took out 2012 Jr. High State Champions David Vantassell. Poulsen defeated Vantassell of Duchesne in a 5-4 thriller in the final round. Poulsen won in the Beehive Brawl just a week ago and finished 3-0 in this tournament. Danny Thompson of
Holden Richards of
Gentry Warner of Juab sealed the 83-pound title with a 6-0 decision against Zach Taylor of Delta in the closing contest. This is Warner’s third consecutive weekend as champion as he claimed one in the Beehive Brawl last weekend and the Juab Jr Wasp tournament two weeks prior. North Sevier’s Colton Covington won the consolation match against Hunter Thacker of
Coming away as champion of the 86-pound for the second year in a row was none other than Trevor Cluff of Wasatch with a 5-0 victory over teammate Shawn Sorensen in the title match. Cluff fell short in the Beehive Brawl but took home a title in January in the Wasatch Youth and Jr High tournament. Kota Powell of Duchesne took home the third place trophy with a 10-8 win against Jarrin Church of Canyon View.

The winner of the 93-pound was Seth Gardner of Wasatch with a 6-4 decision against Cooper Skinner of
The 96-pound title went to Taten Ringel of
Jakob Discher of Wasatch won the 100-pound with a 6-2 final over Austin Davis of Spanish Fork in the title match. Emerging victorious from the consolation bout was Rylee Green of
Caritos Nava of
Delta’s Dalin Ewert earned his way to a 1st place finish with a 10-0 Major over Wyatt Monroe of Payson in the title round. Taking home the third place title was Kolton Owens of Panguitch with a 12-4 final over Preston Carter of Delta.
Claiming the Junior High 112-pound championship was Owen Pentz of Morgan after he defeated Nathan Richards of

Zac Musselman of
Winning the 124-pound bracket was Tyler Manookin of Payson as he defeated Carlos Lazaro of Delta, 9-4, in the closing round. Manookin won in the Nebo Junior High District Championships earlier this season. Sealing the third seat was Xavier Mackley of Wasatch with a 7-4 decision over Byron Anderson of
Winning the 128-pound matchup for a second year in a row was Ritchie Heywood of Wasatch who scored a 4-3 decision over Jacky Bryge of Carbon. Finishing third was none other than Justin Christensen of Payson with a 10-6 victory over Kyler Dick of
Chayce Loveless of Payson defeated Ashton Dieli of Emery, 6-2, in the final round to claim ownership of the 132-pound title. DJ Cohen of Wasatch walked away as the consolation champion after pinning Bryken Jensen of
Jason Hatch of Delta was crowned champion of the 138-pound bracket after an 8-2 toppling of
Payden Osborne of Payson won the 145-pound medal with a startling 15-0 tech-fall over North Sevier’s Mac Peterson in the championship. Osborne was also a first place winner of the Beehive Brawl and Wasatch Youth and Jr High Tournament. Domanik Stansfield of
Ashton J Seely of Juab won his second straight Jr. High State Championship as he defeated Bryson Conger of
Cutler Thomas of Desert Hills captured top honors of the 170-pound bracket after a triumph in 4:05 over Hunter Anderson of
Sealing it for the 190-pound championship was Aaron Verduzco of Duchesne with a 1:28 finish over Sam Sevy of
Winning the 210-pound championship was Justin Christensen of Carbon with a 0:20 pin over Dylan White of Juab in the title round. Meanwhile John Reil of Delta earned his way to a third place spot after he defeated teammate Brett Roundy, 3-2, in the consolation match.
Clinching top honors of the 210+ was Brett Walker of Delta as he wiped William Ledbedder of
